Meet Watermelon
Watermelon is a water-rich fruit that supplies carbohydrate and contains the amino acid citrulline. Its fresh texture can make it an enjoyable part of a meal or snack.
The fruit can contribute fluid without being a complete hydration strategy or a guaranteed exercise supplement.

What it provides. How to use it.
Food can contribute water
Watermelon contains substantial water, so eating it contributes to total fluid intake. That does not replace drinking according to your needs, especially during prolonged activity or heat. A fruit snack and a sports-hydration plan answer different questions.
Citrulline is an interesting component
Watermelon contains citrulline, which is studied in relation to amino-acid and nitric-oxide biology. A compound’s presence does not tell you that a serving produces a clinically meaningful effect. Ordinary fruit, juice, and purified supplements differ.
A performance trial found no clear advantage
One randomized crossover study did not find significant performance improvements with the tested watermelon juice or citrulline intervention. That result limits the claim for that protocol; it does not imply watermelon has no nutritional value or settle every supplement study.
Prepare the fruit, not just the cut surface
Follow safe produce-handling guidance, including cleaning the rind before cutting. A knife can transfer contamination from the outside to the edible portion. Refrigerate cut fruit appropriately and follow the storage instructions for packaged products rather than leaving a tray out all day.
Use it where you enjoy it
Serve chilled pieces alongside lunch, combine it with another fruit, or use it in a savory salad. Sweetness does not make carbohydrate useless. At Primal, the useful takeaway is a fruit option that fits your routine, with hydration and performance expectations kept realistic.

Can watermelon replace a hydration plan during sport?
No. It contributes water, but fluid and electrolyte decisions depend on the activity and person.
Is watermelon juice proven to improve my workout?
Not universally. The trial summarized here found no significant performance benefit from its tested preparation.
What the evidence means for you
Watermelon is mostly water
Utah State Extension describes its water-rich composition and ordinary fruit use.
Put it to use: Use it as one enjoyable contribution to meals and snacks.
Keep in mind: Composition does not establish an individualized hydration prescription.
Utah State University Extension →The tested juice did not improve exercise outcomes
A 22-person trial found no significant advantage in its measured exercise outcomes with watermelon juice or citrulline.
Put it to use: Avoid assuming a pre-workout benefit from any watermelon product.
Keep in mind: The result concerns one protocol and does not cover all doses or populations.
